GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE DERMATOLOGY ROTATION

 

 

Goal:

To develop family physicians capable of effectively diagnosing and managing variety of skin problems in all age ranges

Objectives:

After completing the rotation, the resident will be able to:

1. Elicit a complete problem focused history including:

-temporal changes in skin lesion(s)

-sun exposure

-environmental exposure to plants, chemicals or animals

-contact exposures to makeups, soaps, shampoos, topical medications

hair/nail abnormalities

all current and past medications/previous diagnosis and treatment

-pertinent family history

-pertinent psychosocial history -aggrevating or relieving symptoms

-body distribution of lesions

2. Perform a focused physical examination of skin, hair, and nails including: size, color, shape and texture

3. Diagnose and manage

-Psoriasis

-Acne

-Actinic and Seborrheic keratoses -Squamous/basilar skin cancers -Neurodermatitis

-Contact dermatitis

-Infestation

-Warts

-Fungal infections of skin, hair, and nails

-Skin cancers

-Skin lesions which are associated with systemic medical illnesses including systemic cancers

4. Iinterpret the following diagnostic tests:

-skin scraping

-bacterial/fungal culture

-pathology reports -Wood's light examination

-perform KOH, PSS, Wright stain, and gram stain slides -microscopic examination of KOH, PSS, and gramstains

5. Perform the following simple procedures:

-shave biopsy

-electrocautery

-punch biopsy

-cryotherapy

-incision and drainage

-appropriate techniques of local anesthesia -curretage with or without cautery

-lesional excisions

-interlesional injections

6. The resident will understand the pharmacology and be able to correctly prescribe the folioring meditations:

-podophylltn -trtchloroacettc acid -anttbtottcs for acne -5-fluorouracil -Accutane, -antilunge1 agents -ointments and creams

-benzoyl peroxide

-retinoic acid

-antihistamines

-topical steroids

-oral steroids

-drying agents

6. Consult appropriately a dermatologist, a general surgeon, or a plastic surgeon when appropriate.
