GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR OUTPATIENT CARDIOLOGY

 

I. GOALS:

1. To develop family physicians capable of effectively diagnosing and managing a wide variety of outpatient cardiac problems.

2. To gain additional expertise in performing and interpreting diagnostic tests (i.e. CXR, ECG, ABG’s).

 

II. Objectives

1. The resident will be able to elicit a complete cardiovascular history including:

  • Chest pain
  • Plapitations
  • Claudications
  • Pertinent family history
  • Edema
  • Dyspnea and orthopnea
  • Transient ischemic attacks
  • Pertinent Psychosocial history

2. The resident will be able to perform a complete cardiovascular examination including:

  • Auscultation of the heart, lung, and carotids
  • Assessment of the jugular venous status and hepatojugular reflux Assessment of edema and the volume status
  • Assessment of pulses

3. The resident will diagnose and manage

  • Coronary artery heart disease
  • Acute uncomplicated Myocardial Infarction
  • Common arrythmias
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Mitral valve prolapse
  • Other uncomplicated valvular heart disease.

4. The resident will demonstrate the ability to interpret the following diagnostic tests:

  • Electrocardiogram
  • Chest X-ray
  • Holter monitor(Under supervision)
  • Data from invasive monitoring(Swan Ganz) Stress testing (with supervision)

5. The resident will learn when to consult a cardiologist.
