Newborn Nursery Rotation
**You will receive a large binder with lots of reading/lectures and info**
Location:
HUP
Silverstein Building, 8th floor newborn nursery
(swipe your card to get in)
Setup of Rotation:
You are functioning as an extra intern on the service with 3 other pediatric interns. You will be doing newborn exams, writing interim notes, and discharge notes. You will become familiar with basic newborn exam and filling out the 10 forms for both admission and discharge of baby. Typical day begins around 7am where one person from the team (includes nurse practitioners who will be giving you your orientation) will get signout from the ICU team. They will hand you a bunch of index cards (each with a pt name on it) which you will divide amongst the interns. Pre-round on the pts, fill out the appropriate forms, and present to the attending usually around 9am or 10am. There is usually noon conference at CHOP (food provided). There are also didactic lectures incorporated throughout the month, usually around 11am. You will take one weekend call(Saturday&Sunday) during the month with another pediatric intern (usually ending somewhere between noon-three).
PFC Clinic on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Computer Systems:
Sunrise: this is used to put in all orders, check results, meds etc.
www.phillypeds.com - is the website that has a lot of pediatric information including the pediatric intern survival guide. See Chief Resident or senior resident for UN/PW.
Navicare: System used to communicate info about patients between nurses, physicians, discharge planners. Tracks patient on each floor by name/room#. You will be able to find info re: which nurse is assigned to which patient.
Charts:
There are full paper charts at the newborn nursery, then vitals are on a flowsheet that usually is placed on the crib. Weights, bilirubins, fingersticks, documentation of shots given are all recorded here.
Moms’ charts are located in overhead cubbies near their rooms-you will need to review these to find out pertinent maternal/prenatal history.
Parking:
1. The parking lot is on 34th street past HUP and CHOP. It is called parking lot 51. There is a shuttle bus that runs back and forth between parking lot/HUP and CHOP usually every 5-10 mins and more frequently during rush hour. Take the shuttle otherwise it is a good 10 min walk to the hospital.
5. The parking magnet card will be given to you during orientation. You will also be given a parking sticker that you are supposed to display on the left passenger window of your car.
Cafeteria:
Meals are usually provided at the noon conferences at CHOP. No money credited to your ID.
Call rooms:
No overnight calls.
