HUP Internal Medicine Founders Service Rotation

Location:

Founders Building 12th and 14th Floor (overflow on Rhodes 3&4 and possibly Silverstein building)

Setup of Rotation:
Founders Medicine is set up with a C/D service and an E/F service. You will be either on C/D or E/F. Each letter has 2 teams, so you will be letter 1 or letter 2 (eg. C1 or C2). So for each service there are four teams total. Each team consists of 1 upper level internal medicine resident and 2 interns (internal medicine, transitional, prelim, sub-I, FM).
The teams rotate call every fourth night. You will be assigned to one of the teams and take call every fourth night.
Resident rounds are usually at 8am, so you should finish pre-rounding before then. The time for attending rounds varies by attending. Notes are printed from the medview computer system-accessed via your login and available on all computers at HUP.  On post-call days you are supposed to be out by 1pm and there is a nurse practitioner or dayfloat resident available to help with your post-call work. On other days, sign out is basically when you finish doing your work – can range from 3pm to 7pm. On a weekend day when you are not on call or post call, you have the day off. That averages out to 4 days off per month. You also have your FP continuity clinic once a week in the AM that is usually a pre-call day.

Computer Systems:
Sunrise: this is used to put in all orders, check results, meds etc.

Medview (including sign-out): this is used to see more extensive records on a patient. Also this is how you will sign-in/sign-out. Go to housestaff, then signout, then select your name, and you will see your sign out sheet. You and your resident share the responsibility of keeping the signout up-to-date. To print it, go to “view as Microsoft word document”, then print. You can see anyone’s signout sheet by searching under their name.  You will also be able to print your notes out through Medview. After signing in, click “my notes” tab and you will be able pull up pre-made notes including medications and recent lab values for patients assigned to you.

Geocities.com/pennmedicine: this is a link where you can find pager numbers on EVERYONE in the internal medicine department.

Magicweb: this is where all the radiology images are.   This program automatically interfaces with medview.

Navicare: System used to communicate info about patients between nurses, physicians, discharge planners. Tracks patient on each floor by name/room#. You will be able to find info re: which nurse is assigned to which patient.

Charts:
There are full paper charts at the nurse’s station, and then vitals chart at the bedside, usually hanging outside the door.

Call rooms:
These are located on the Founders floor 12 or 14. You share a call room with your fellow intern on call.

Parking:
1. The parking lot is on 34th street past HUP and CHOP. It is called parking lot 51. There is a shuttle bus that runs back and forth between parking lot/HUP and CHOP usually every 5-10 mins and more frequently during rush hour. Take the shuttle otherwise it is a good 10 min walk to the hospital.
5. The parking magnet card will be given to you during orientation. You will also be given a parking sticker that you are supposed to display on the left passenger window of your car.

Cafeteria:
Cafteria is on the 2nd floor of the Founders Building. A $50 credit will be applied to your HUP ID card and you can swipe at the cafeteria to pay.  Lunch is sometimes free in the medicine conference room – usually on M/Th/F there is conference at 1pm for interns. The room is located on 5-Maloney.
