CHOP Pediatric Inpatient Rotation

 

Location:

CHOP

34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard

5West – Gen Peds/HemeOnc

5 South – Gen Peds/Pulmonary

5 East – Adolescent/Renal

7 West – Gen Peds/Neurology

 

Setup of Rotation:

The team is made up of a third year, second year and 3-4 interns.

You are functioning as an extra intern on the service with 3 or 4 other pediatric interns. Typical day begins around 7am with signout from the intern on call the previous night. Pre-round on the pts and write your soap notes. Attending rounds usually begin at 8am. You may round with the specialty team and then the General Pediatrics team or vice versa. On Thursdays, there will be radiology rounds or mock codes at 7:30am and you will need to arrive earlier to write soap notes. There is usually Grand Rounds on Wednesdays at 8am (therefore attending rounds are later). Noon conference everyday where upper year will hold your pager (food provided). There is also attending lectures incorporated throughout the month (time varies). If not in clinic, afternoons are to do work and take admissions(you will help out the on-call team with admissions). Day typically ends at 5pm. Call is q4 and you are on call with a 2nd or 3rd year resident. (don’t need to go in on weekends if you are not on, and don’t need to write full notes on weekends when you are on). While on call, you are expected to “midnight round” on patients-check vitals and examine patients of concern to you.

 

Computer Systems:

Sunrise: this is used to put in all orders, check results, meds etc.   Radiology images automatically interface with Sunrise

 

www.phillypeds.com - is the website that has a lot of pediatric information including the pediatric intern survival guide. UN/PW from chief or your senior resident.

 

Charts:

There are full paper charts at the nursing stations, then vitals are hanging by the doors. 

 

Parking:

1.The parking lot is on 34th street past HUP and CHOP. It is called parking lot 51. There is a shuttle bus that runs back and forth between parking lot/HUP and CHOP usually every 5-10 mins and more frequently during rush hour. Take the shuttle otherwise it is a good 10 min walk to the hospital.

2 The parking magnet card will be given to you during orientation. You will also be given a parking sticker that you are supposed to display on the left passenger window of your car.

3. You may park in Woods Building underground garage if you are arriving after 2pm. Swipe ID card after 2pm on weekdays (anytime on weekends) to get in.

 

 

Cafeteria:

Meal card provided for calls on this rotation. You should pick this up on 1st day of orientation along with your photo ID. You get about $60 to use anytime and need to use it by end of rotation.

 

Call rooms:

There is a whole list of call rooms. Some are located on 5th floor (designated for your particular wing) and another set located on the 9th floor. Need code (on 5th fl) or ID card (on 9th fl) to get in. Discuss with your resident and/or co-intern which call room will be best for you to use.
