GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE SPORTS MEDICINE ROTATION PGY3

Goal:

Residents will be able to care for athletes of all ages and fitness levels with an appropriate biopsychosocial approach.

Objectives:

BEHAVIORAL

The resident should:

 

1.      Develop awareness of the emotional impact of injury on the athlete.

2.      Develop awareness of the emotional benefits of exercise.

3.      Develop awareness of how concurrent chronic medical illness impacts on athletic participation.

4.  Develop awareness of the physician's role as a team physician.

 

COGNITIVE

The resident should:

1.      Recognize and appropriately treat and/or refer acute ligamentous and cartilaginous injuries (i.e. ACL tear).

2.  Recognize and appropriately treat athletic overuse syndromes (i.e. shin splints, tendonopathies).

 

3.  Recognize and appropriately treat sprains and strains.

4.  Recognize, appropriately treat and/or refer fractures and dislocations.

5.  Recognize, appropriately treat and refer injuries of the head and neck, including concussion management.

 

6.  Recognize and appropriately treat acute medical conditions in athletes, specifically syncope, EIB, heat illness, hyponatremia.

 

7.  Understand the nutritional needs of the athlete, including fluid and electrolytes, and risk/benefits of common supplements/ergogenic aids used by athletes ( i.e. steroids).

8. Recognize and be able to form a treatment plan for the “female athlete triad”.

MOTOR SKILLS

The resident should be able to:

1.      Satisfactorily perform arthrocentesis in appropriate sports-related joint injuries, specifically knee effusions.

2.      Satisfactorily perform injections in appropriate sports-related joint injuries, specifically knee, shoulder, wrist and hand.

3.      Satisfactorily apply supportive splints to acutely injured joints and extremities

4.      Satisfactorily perform a Pre-participation sports physical, focusing on recognizing risk factors for sudden cardiac death in athletes.

5.      Satisfactorily review basic imaging of athletic injuries
