Adult Medicine Goals and Objectives

Goal:

To gain proficiency in the management of common problems requiring admission.

Objectives:

After completion of the inpatient medicine curriculum the resident will be able to:

  1. Identify the most common inpatient diagnoses.
  2. Evaluate, manage and discuss the most common inpatient diagnoses.
  3. Perform and interpret the following tests and procedures:
    1. EKG
    2. arterial blood gases
    3. hemodynamic parameters
    4. plain film of the chest and abdomen
    5. pulmonary function testing
    6. respirator parameters
  4. Perform independently the following procedures:
    1. lumbar puncture
    2. thoracocentesis
    3. paracentesis
    4. application of BLS and ACLS
    5. arthrocentesis
  5. The PGY 3’s will perform team management including:
    1. proficiency in the supervisory role, including development of organization skills allowing the integration of teaching and patient care on the team
  6. The PGY 3 will motivate the faculty and junior residents in educational activities.
  7. Interact appropriately with other specialties.
  8. Perform appropriate consultation including pre-op and post-op care.
  9. The PGY 3 will coordinate teaching on the team, including coordination of faculty teaching and devlivering content themselves
