The Drew Health Collaborative: An on-going collaborative project with middle school students, parents, teachers and administrators in the Charles Drew School at 38th and Powelton Streets in West Philadelphia
Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Initiatives
Drew Health Ambassador Project
This curriculum centers on the topic of asthma and is appropriate for a 4th and 5th grade audience. The intent is that we provide 5-6 after-school sessions (~3-5pm) each semester. For your community medicine rotation this may amount to anywhere from 1 to 3 Tuesday afternoons. This time has been blocked out on your schedule. If it is not reserved for this purpose, please discuss the conflict with Darcy, or Dr. Cronholm.
A part of your community medicine rotation you will be a “Health Ambassador” at Drew Elementary School. You will be working in conjunction with undergraduate Penn students who are taking a class called Health and Society. These students are sophomores, juniors and seniors and have a variety of majors including education and pre-medical. The contact information for these students is stored in a folder called “DrewCommMed”, which has been created on the FM Public folder. You will likely need to contact these students to arrange time to confirm your dates and times, and to review the curriculum and how you will organize its presentation.
If you are going to be doing your community medicine rotation after the New Year (2008), you may or may not be working with Penn undergraduate students. If you are doing your community medicine rotation toward the end of 2007 you may be tasked with helping to plan the continuation of this after-school curriculum for the following year.
Niva Kramek (
niva@sas.upenn.edu)is coordinating the efforts of the Penn students and is a good person to contact if you have any problems reaching the students involved in this program. She has your contact information and may contact you with regard to Drew.
